Where to stay in the UAE: start with the emirate

The important hotel decision in the UAE is often the destination, not the star rating. Compare four very different types of stay.

Searching for “UAE hotels” mixes together properties that suit completely different holidays. A Dubai Marina apartment, a Saadiyat Island beach resort and a hotel on the Fujairah coast are not interchangeable just because they all have pools. Choose the emirate first; the hotel shortlist becomes much smaller.

Four very different bases

Dubai — for a first visit with plenty to do. It has the broadest choice of city hotels, beach resorts, shopping, restaurants and paid attractions. The catch is distance: a hotel beside Dubai Mall is convenient for Downtown but not for daily beach trips. If you want both, accept some taxi journeys or split the holiday sensibly. See our Dubai area comparison.

Abu Dhabi — for culture, beach resorts or Yas Island parks. The key is not to confuse Saadiyat Island with Yas Island. Saadiyat suits a beach-and-museums stay; Yas suits a family whose diary is full of theme parks. Neither is an ideal substitute for a central city hotel if you mainly have meetings in town. Read where to stay in Abu Dhabi.

Ras Al Khaimah — for days spent at the resort. It can make sense for families and couples who want a beach hotel as the main event, with an occasional outing. It is a poor base if you expect to sightsee in Dubai every day.

Fujairah — for a different coast and a slower trip. The Gulf of Oman setting is a reason to go in itself. It is not a convenient alternative to a Dubai hotel when your must-see list is in Dubai.

Three bookings we would approach differently

Three nights, first time in the UAE: use one well-positioned Dubai city or Marina hotel. Changing hotels on a very short stay rarely pays off.

One week with children and two theme-park days: look seriously at a Yas Island hotel rather than booking in Dubai and commuting repeatedly. Check whether attraction access is included in the exact room rate.

A beach-first week with one sightseeing day: a resort in Ras Al Khaimah or on the Palm may work. Compare transfer cost and where you will eat: an inexpensive room-only rate can be less attractive when meals require a taxi.

Compare the final bill, not just the nightly rate

Room-only versus breakfast, half-board and all-inclusive can change the value of a stay. So can local tourism charges, a children's extra bed, guaranteed connecting rooms and cancellation flexibility. Verify the total payable amount at checkout rather than relying on a headline rate.

Do not treat a hotel name on this page as a live offer. For example properties in specific districts, use the Dubai and Abu Dhabi guides. The official Visit Dubai accommodation guide is also useful for checking hotel categories.

Working out a shortlist

Before enquiring, decide on your dates, number and ages of guests, maximum total accommodation budget and the two places you will visit most often. Send those details to [email protected] if you want help narrowing the options. A quoted rate and a confirmed booking are separate steps.
