Car rental in Dubai: the costs beyond the daily rate

The daily rate is only the start. Understand DXB pickup, Salik, insurance excess, credit-card holds and mileage before renting in Dubai.

Dubai rental-car comparisons often start with the daily rate. They should start with the trip. If you are spending four days around a Metro-connected hotel and need a car only for a trip to another Emirate, collecting a vehicle at the airport for the whole stay may add cost with little benefit.

Collect at DXB or have the car delivered later?

Dubai International Airport has rental desks across its passenger terminals, but each operator has its own coverage. Before paying, confirm whether collection is at Terminal 1, 2 or 3, the desk's opening arrangements for your arrival and what happens if the flight is delayed. The official Dubai Airports services directory lets you filter car-hire services by terminal.

If your first days are spent around Downtown or Marina and you will only drive later, compare hotel delivery with airport collection. A delivery fee may still cost less than unused rental days and hotel parking.

Salik is not an optional extra

Dubai's Salik system records toll-road crossings without barriers. Charges can vary by time of day, and the rental company may add administration fees when passing tolls on to you. Ask the supplier whether it invoices each crossing at the underlying toll price or charges an additional fee. The official Salik explanation describes how the system operates.

Know the difference between a deposit and an excess

Deposit: money held or secured against charges. Ask what card type the supplier accepts, how much will be blocked and when it can be released.

Insurance excess: the amount you may remain responsible for under the policy following damage or another covered event. An optional protection product can change that liability, but may have exclusions. Do not assume “fully insured” means nothing is payable after an incident.

Also check separately whether glass, tyres, underside damage, roadside assistance and unauthorised driving are excluded.

Driving licence: check your status, not just your nationality

A short-term visitor and a UAE resident may face different driving-document rules. An International Driving Permit can be required in some cases and is not a universal substitute for the original national licence. Confirm your exact documents with the rental operator before payment. The RTA driving-document guidance is a useful official starting point.

Mileage matters for inter-emirate trips

For city-only driving, a mileage cap might not be the main concern. For a route to Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah or Fujairah, it can change the final bill. Compare the allowed kilometres, the excess-kilometre fee, one-way return charges and whether cross-border driving is prohibited. Driving from the UAE into Oman is not something to assume is included.

Parking: the underestimated cost

Check overnight parking at your accommodation before you choose the rental. Public parking and some malls have their own charges and rules. A hotel listed as “central” may offer little benefit to a driver if the vehicle has nowhere convenient to stay.

When a car is the wrong choice

For a two-night Dubai break focused on Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall and restaurants near a Metro station, taxis and public transport can be simpler. For a full-day multi-district sightseeing itinerary, a private driver may be easier than dealing with unfamiliar parking. For a multi-emirate self-drive holiday, however, renting can be a sensible part of the plan.

Before collecting the keys

Photograph the vehicle, including wheels and glass; note its existing damage, fuel level and mileage; confirm the return time and location; and keep the rental agreement and emergency number accessible. Ask how final tolls and traffic fines are settled after return.
